Looking back at the beginning of your career, how did you feel about the financial aspects? Was money even an issue? Were there any constraints or expectations? If so, how did you react?

When Grant McLennan and I started The Go-Betweens in 1978, there was little consideration about money. I was a University student who had a part-time job and I wasn’t thinking of music or being in a band, as a way to make lots of money. I was doing it for fun. I was ambitious artistically but not financially. Also, I had no idea how long The Go-Betweens would last. Two years? Three Years?

When were you able to start making a living from music? Exclusively?

In 1984, when the band signed to Sire Records, an international record company. That was the first time I got a wage from being in the band. Until then, there was very little money.

In an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung Steven Van Zandt also known as „Little Steven“ was asked whether he would advise musicians today to pursue a professional career. He said he would not advise anyone to do so. That is the cruel truth. What is your view?

I agree with Steven Van Zandt. There aren’t enough solid and reliable income streams anymore to be a professional musician. You need a part-time or full-time job to have the money to play music in a band or a solo artist. It is the cruel truth unfortunately.

Wenn Sie auf den Beginn Ihrer Karriere zurückblicken, wie haben Sie die finanziellen Aspekte empfunden? War Geld überhaupt ein Thema? Gab es Einschränkungen oder Erwartungen? Wenn ja, wie haben Sie darauf reagiert?

Als Grant McLennan und ich 1978 The Go-Betweens gründeten, haben wir uns kaum Gedanken über Geld gemacht. Ich war Student, hatte einen Teilzeitjob und dachte nicht daran, mit Musik oder einer Band viel Geld zu verdienen. Ich habe es aus Spaß gemacht. Ich war künstlerisch ambitioniert, aber nicht finanziell. Außerdem hatte ich keine Ahnung, wie lange The Go-Betweens bestehen bleiben würden. Zwei Jahre? Drei Jahre?

Wann konntest Du anfangen, ausschließlich von der Musik zu leben?

1984, als die Band einen Vertrag bei der internationalen Plattenfirma Sire Records unterschrieb. Das war das erste Mal, dass ich ein Gehalt für meine Arbeit in der Band erhielt. Bis dahin gab es nur sehr wenig Geld.

In einem Interview mit der „Süddeutschen Zeitung” wurde Steven Van Zandt bekannt als „Little Steven“ gefragt, ob er Musikern heute raten würde, eine professionelle Karriere anzustreben. Er antwortete, dass er niemandem dazu raten würde. Das ist die grausame Wahrheit. Wie siehst Du das?

Ich stimme Steven Van Zandt zu. Es gibt nicht mehr genug solide und verlässliche Einnahmequellen, um als professioneller Musiker zu arbeiten. Man braucht einen Teilzeit- oder Vollzeitjob, um sich das Geld für die Musik zu verdienen. Das ist leider die grausame Wahrheit.
